History of Credit Counselling Service of Simcoe County

Partly as a result of the growing awareness by social service organization and the business community, that excessive debt was, and is, a social problem, Credit Counselling Service was establish to serve the people of the Simcoe-Georgian Bay Region.

A volunteer Board of Directors was formed consisting of representatives of the business, financial, and social service communities to investigate the possibility of the formation of a service in Simcoe-Georgian Bay Region, patterned on the service of Credit Counselling Service of Metropolitan Toronto.

The
Credit Counselling Service of Simcoe County was incorporated under letters patent on March 29th, 1973.  The service was registered as a charitable organization on April 1st, 1973.  Our doors were opened officially to the community on September 1st, 1973.

Our Agency was originally sponsored and funded by the Ministry of Community and Social Services.  The Ministry terminated funding on March 31st, 1992.  The O.A.C.C.S. established a liaison between Credit Counselling Agencies, credit grantors, and Provincial and Federal authorities.  The O.A.C.C.S. was also successful in obtaining the required additional financial support from the following stakeholders: Canadian Banker’s Association, Association of Canadian Financial corporation, major retailers, major trust companies, and local credit unions.

Between 1993 and 1997 Credit Counselling evolved to 100% private sector funding.  In 1995 and 2000, Credit Counselling of Simcoe-Georgian Bay Region received a certificate of accreditation from O.A.C.C.S.  On June 07, 2000
Credit Counselling Service of Simcoe County became a charter member of Credit Canada.

In 2001, CCSSC has expanded the offices to include an educational centre.  CCSSC is able to provide in house educational seminar on Money Management and Budgeting & the Wise Use of Credit.

Our board of Directors consists of President, Vice-President, Treasurer, Directors and Officers who have provided time and service to our organization over the years, together with leaders from many segments of the community.  They provide CCSSC with leadership, knowledge, advice and encouragement.

In retrospect the accumulation of both past and present efforts have culminated into our plan.
